Hi all,
I’ve spent the last few weeks preparing for one of my big annual events, the MS Queensland Brissie to the Bay 130km cycle ride. Thanks to lots of generous friends and supporters, I raised $3000 to help people living with multiple sclerosis.
Next up, I’ll be switching to running, with Fred’s Big Run, raising money for the Fred Hollows Foundation. I’m going for maximum ambition again, aiming to run 150km in August 2023, and to match the $3000 I just raised. It will be a stretch on both counts, but I’ll commit to doing the k’s if enough money comes in. My fundraising page is here https://www.fredsbigrun.org/fundraisers/johnquiggin/freds-big-run-2023
As well as training, I’ve been finishing off a couple of book projects. I’ve submitted a manuscript After Neoliberalism to ANU Press. It’s a selection of my work on the general topic of neoliberalism (aka Economic Rationalism), going back to the 1980s. And, coming out soon, Western Welfare Capitalisms in Good Times and Bad with Bruce Headey and Ruud Muffels, will be published by Edward Elgar.
I have a couple more book projects on the hop, lecture notes from courses I’ve given on Politics, Philosophy and Economics, and on opportunity cost. After that, I might turn my attention to a book on the future of the economy, and the case for socialist democracy, which I’ve had in mind for quite a while.
In July, I’ll be travelling overseas for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, presenting papers on decision under uncertainty, and on voting systems to conferences in Denmark and France. I’m fully (5x) vaccinated, and will wear a mask where practical, but I’m aware there is a bigger risk than our governments seem willing to acknowledge.
