As usual this year, I’ll be raising money for the MS Brissie to the Bay appeal, which helps to support people living with Multiple Sclerosis, and research towards treatment and cure.
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to do the ride this year, but I will be logging my progress. With the economist’s penchant for incentives, I’ll promise to do more if my wonderful readers give more. I’ll start by promising to ride 250km between now and June 4, when the event takes place. If I can raise $1000, I’ll put the target up to 400km, and include one ride of 90km (the shorter distance on offer for the official ride, IIRC). If I can reach my goal of $2000, I’ll do 500km and include a ride of 130km, equal to the full distance.
Having a fundraising commitment is good for me, encouraging me to put in effort I might otherwise slack off on. And your contributions are doing some real good.
Although a cure for MS may be a long way off, there are good reasons for hope. Another genetic disease, cystic fibrosis, which at one time meant early and painful death is now treatable in many cases, to the point where patients may have a normal life expectancy if treatment starts early in life
In the meantime, helping people with MS and their families is a good thing to do, and to think about.
