The last month has been dominated by the direct and indirect effects of climate disasters
March is usually the highlight of my sporting calendar. But my big event for the year, the Mooloolaba triathlon was deferred because of Cyclone Alfred. I couldn’t make the new date, so I will have to wait until next year. As it turned out, it may have been for the best. The swim leg of Moo Tri was cancelled.
The horrible weather continued throughout March, with the result that my training suffered badly. I’ve given up my plans to attempt a marathon this year. Fortunately, weather seems finally to have turned for the better in April.
Also deferred by Alfred was the federal election, now to be held in early May. Thanks to the disasters unleashed on the world by the Trump regime, and Dutton’s spectacular incompetence in responding to it, it’s now looking as if Albanese may win an undeserved second term of majority government. I very much hope that voters will elect enough independents and Greens to stop this happening, while making it clear to LNP that Trumpism is not going to sell here.
I’m still committed to a bunch of charity events. I’m planning a separate newsletter about that.
My academic and public work has gone on. One big milestone was my paper with my friend and colleague Flavio Menezes
Menezes, F.M. & Quiggin, J. (2025) Ex ante and ex post equilibrium supply curves. Economic Theory Bulletin, 13.
This paper is the culmination of a long-running research program, aimed at a more general and realistic application of game-theoretic concepts to problems like monopoly. We haven’t succeeded in attracting much attention from the rest of the economics profession on this, but the work is done and I’m happy with it.
